12 Rules For Being Highly-Effective At Networking

Nov 11, 2014 2:10:55 PM

Networking

Many personal and business opportunities arise because of your personal and/or professional network(s). Because of this, knowing how to effectively network can result in larger dividends when reaching out to your network. Networking is one thing. Being an effective networker, however, takes it to the next level. Here's what you should do:

  1. State your name clearly
  2. Stand up when being introduced
  3. Avoid pointing at someone when speaking
  4. Mind your language
  5. Tell clean stories
  6. Shake hands instead of fist bumping
  7. Avoid interrupting others
  8. Be interesting, yet brief
  9. Avoid distractions (phone/laptop)
  10. Maintain eye contact and smile
  11. Ask if you don't know
  12. Follow-up shortly after meeting (within 2 days)

Many of these rules fall under the "go without saying" category. Either way, it's nice to have a refresher. For more details about the list, see the full article on Inc.com.
