Why You Can’t Wait to Adopt AI for Marketing

Do you hear that sound, off in the distance? It’s the “AI train” pulling out of the station—and if you’re not on it, you’re already running behind. While the metaphor may seem funny, there’s a seriousness to whether or not marketers have accepted artificial intelligence (AI) as a necessary evolution. While the gap grows between those who have adopted AI for marketing and those still waiting, the space between marks a noteworthy competitive edge. One that ultimately yields higher conversions, greater brand loyalty, and increased marketing ROI.

How to use content intelligence to improve brand consistency

By Patti Doyle on Mar 14, 2019 12:20:20 PM

Just how valuable is brand consistency? That is, the practice of consistently conveying your company’s value, promises and offerings in all of your deliverables — and in ways that resonate with your customers?

Brand consistency is the key to boosting brand trust, brand awareness and brand loyalty. And, according to 200 organizations in a recent survey by LucidPress and DemandMetric, it also can lead to an increase in profits — by as much as 23 percent.

But a significant number of the organizations surveyed also said that brand consistency can be elusive, with 60 percent reporting that their teams are regularly creating materials that don’t conform to their company’s brand guidelines.

Create a customer-focused content strategy that promotes brand loyalty

Take a second to consider the many ways people get their caffeine fix. Some may brew the old-fashioned way — using a coffee pot or a French press to get the job done. Others may use a Keurig.

And no smart coffee shop barista will assume that every person in line wants a black cup of java. Not when there are thousands of possibilities.

And that’s just coffee.

Developing a content strategy also requires that type of consideration for the different experiences customers want from your brand. Customers are increasingly demanding more — highly relevant experiences delivered in a way that shows you understand them.

Build brand loyalty with a data-driven content strategy

By Patti Doyle on Feb 26, 2019 10:33:51 AM

Are you really giving customers what they want?

Now, more than ever, even your most loyal customers say they are willing to switch to another brand — especially since technology is making it even easier for them to do so.

Here are a few reasons why customers may leave your brand for another:

  • 66% of customers say they’re likely to switch brands if they feel treated like a number.
  • 81% of customers want brands to understand them better — knowing when and when not to approach them.
  • Customers are 52% more likely to switch brands if communications lack personalization.
  • 33% will leave your brand after just one instance of bad customer service.
  • Customers want you to build experiences that allow them to define their own journey.

While those numbers highlight just how challenging it is to build customer loyalty, that doesn’t mean you can’t retain customers for the long term. It just may require more (and different) work than it did just five to 10 years ago.

5 great storytelling tips to increase brand awareness

By Patti Doyle on Feb 13, 2019 12:14:11 PM

Not that long ago, or at least it seems, the business of building brand awareness was fairly straightforward. The success of your campaign typically had a lot to do with the size of your budget and the creativity of your marketing team.

Content marketing has disrupted everything. Small companies, and even individual bloggers, are generating brand awareness among their target audiences at a degree that can surpass those built through multimillion-dollar marketing initiatives.

That type of success requires a deep understanding of your customers, and what they want at every stage of their experience with you — whether it’s getting more information, buying a product or service to solve a problem, or simply being entertained.

While this is the Age of the Customer, it’s not all about the customers. Success also lies in telling your side of the story; humanizing your company in a way that customers find relatable and authentic.

Content Marketing 2020: Where Are We Now?

By Patti Doyle on Feb 6, 2019 11:32:13 PM

This is Part I of a two-part series about content marketing’s evolution.

Marketing has been changing fast, but just how fast? Over the past several years, marketers and researchers have been predicting what the content marketing landscape will look like in 2020. Coca-Cola created waves in the marketing industry in 2011 with the release of its Content 2020 vision, a radical departure from the traditional advertising model. Back then, some projections may have seemed futuristic. Unlikely, even.

Now that we’re less than a year away from 2020, we compiled a list of some of those predictions to see which ones are close to the reality of marketing today and in the near future.

What content intelligence means for creatives and publishers

By Patti Doyle on Feb 4, 2019 10:46:07 PM

Content marketing continues to deliver a strong marketing ROI, with a majority of marketers reporting that the strategy made their companies more successful than the year before. That was among the findings in the latest benchmark reports released by the Content Marketing Institute.

And, B2B marketers cited quality content creation as the most significant contributing factor for those results.  Among B2C respondents, content creation came in a close second as a major factor to their successful campaigns,  just behind strategy.

Relevant, quality content has become the new performance standard in marketing. With customers’ demanding more experiences from brands, that shouldn’t be changing any time soon.

How to create a content strategy that builds brand trust

By Patti Doyle on Jan 31, 2019 12:11:32 PM

Brand trust in businesses took a dive in 2018. In the wake of unfavorable news surrounding big brands like Facebook (privacy), United Airlines (customer service) and Equifax (cybersecurity), only 48% of Americans reported that they trusted businesses, according to the 2018 Edelman Trust Barometer.

When compared to other countries, the United States suffered among the worst slides — losing 10 points in overall customer trust — down from 58% in 2017.

According to another recent survey, 79% of customers said brands must demonstrate “they understand and care about me? before they consider purchasing. The report by Wunderman also revealed that 89% of American customers said that they are loyal to brands that share their values.

The biggest trends impacting content intelligence in 2019

One of the reasons I love being a marketer is that the only thing constant about it is change. A bit trite or overused, right? But, I am truly excited about the speed and impact that emerging technologies will have on marketing in the upcoming year.

A MarTech buyer’s cheat sheet to understanding AI lingo

The future of content marketing with AI-driven content intelligence

Imagine you are in a scene stolen from the movie Back to the Future. Your future self has just returned from 2035 to tell your marketing team how much things have changed as a result of artificial intelligence.

Perhaps, you’ll share that futurist Dr. Michio Kaku was right when he predicted that we will lose our portable devices since everything, from the wallpaper in our homes to public streets, are the computers we seamlessly communicate with. Maybe you’ll confirm futurist Oren Etzioni’s prediction that artificial intelligence (AI) will find the cure for cancer by sifting through tons of scientific research.

All impressive.

However, it doesn’t take a Back to the Future scenario to grasp how marketing is already changing as a result of artificial intelligence.

What Dating Taught Me About Understanding Manufacturing Sales

By Bart Frischknecht on May 22, 2017 10:33:53 AM

I used to think that great deals started with a great product and closed with a Jedi salesperson that could mystically anticipate every customer objection and demonstrate product superiority in terms of benefits, features, and price. I realized that if I maintained this outlook, the customer starts to feel like the enemy. As I watched sales cycle after sales cycle, my perspective changed.

5 Ways to Shorten Your Manufacturing Sales Cycle

By Bart Frischknecht on May 4, 2017 11:35:22 AM

We spend much of our time thinking about how attractive our customers look to us. The secret to shortening manufacturing sales cycles is to understand how attractive we look to our potential customers. Think about it. In meeting after meeting and spreadsheet after spreadsheet we analyze customers based on their purchase volume, profit margin, and product mix—celebrating those customers that buy a lot, pay a lot, or buy what we want to sell. In the same breath, we grumble about customers that require gobs of TLC but then don’t buy very much, spend very much, or order what we would like to sell.

The Evolution of Data in Marketing & What’s Next

By Vennli on Jun 27, 2016 7:17:35 AM

When I started as a brand manager at Kraft Foods, our focus was on driving consumption and shipments to retailers. We did this through increased advertising and effective in-store promotions.

We used data to drive decisions. We were focused.

Our scorecard was (and maybe still is) the weekly retail scanner data that informed us of how successful our programs were in the market. Religiously, every week, we looked at the consumption and shipment metrics. We monitored our advertising campaigns with the same rigor. How was TV performing compared to print or in-store? Was the mom-centric campaign outperforming the kid-centric campaign?

This was over a decade ago. Using data in marketing is not a new way of operating.

Often, demographic variables are used to segment customers. While demographics describe consumers and business customers, they often offer little insight into those customers’ needs, the benefits they seek, or the true drivers of their purchase decisions.

What Can Netflix Do To Differentiate Themselves From Amazon Instant Video & HBO GO?

By Vennli on Oct 17, 2014 1:00:21 PM

Movies and TV shows – everyone has their favorites... and everyone has their favorite way of watching them. Now we have literally millions of options at our fingertips at all times. We don’t have to drive to a rental store or wait for something to come on TV – we can have it now via the Internet.

Streaming content is the way of the future, and Netflix is at the forefront of the movement, but they aren’t going to be the only ones who want in on the action. Competitors like Amazon Instant Video and HBO are exploring the potential. Yesterday, HBO announced that they will offer an online-only subscription in 2015 – no cable access required. This is huge, and Netflix just sat up and took notice. Amazon, on the other hand, pretty much offers streaming video as a value-add to their Prime service, but they are continuing to explore the potential here, and they have a lot of resources at their disposal. Netflix should take this threat very seriously.

Netflix has a TON of data on its subscribers’ preferences, and they have been smart about using it to make investment decisions – like deciding to create original content like the House of Cards series. Netflix is in a strong position in the world of streaming content, but it’s a fickle industry and if they take their focus off their growth strategy for an instant, things could change. They need to continue to strengthen their current points of difference while also innovating... pushing their competitors further and further behind them.

We surveyed 260 people recently. Here’s what they said is most important to their choice to subscribe to a streaming video service.

What if you were trying to grow your franchise but, no matter where you looked, your #1 competitor was already there? That’s the reality that Jimmy John’s faces in a world saturated with Subways.

Jimmy John’s is one of the fastest growing franchises, but Subway is the largest franchise in the world. Both sell sandwiches but have very different value propositions in the market.

Apple Unveils New iPhone 6 – Did They Get It Right?

By Vennli on Sep 12, 2014 1:00:59 PM

Smart phones. They’re essentially handheld computers with a wireless plan. Gadget enthusiasts are constantly debating which one is preferable. If you’re in the market for a smart phone, chances are you’re choosing between two archrivals: Apple and Samsung.

These two companies own a combined 2/3 of the market. While Samsung has led in worldwide sales, Apple’s iPhone manages to top Samsung within the US. While Apple started out as the dominant player, the tables have turned and, in many ways, it’s Apple’s turn to play catch up.

In a battle to the death based on features and benefits, it’s likely that it would be a draw – both have a lot to offer… but ties are boring. If we have to declare a winner, it comes down to which aspects matter most to customers. And that’s exactly what Vennli is all about – making strategic decisions based on customer needs. That’s how businesses grow.

We conducted a customer research study to understand how smart phone customers make their purchasing decisions. Did they get it right?

5 Tips Startups Can Learn From The NFL To Build A Strong Community

By Vennli on Sep 8, 2014 1:00:52 PM

The NFL is back for yet another season and fans are rejoicing across the nation. Tens of thousands of chicken wings and beers were consumed this weekend, and everything seems to be alright in the world again. The first Monday Night Football game of the year is expected to see somewhere around 16 to 17 million viewers. It’s this kind of viewership that has kept the NFL as the king of sports in the United States. They have built an incredibly large and passionate community that almost feels too big to ever fail. This is where startups can learn a thing or two.

Without a strong community that is passionate about your product, it is likely the company will collapse. One of the most powerful ways to cultivate a community comes from creating great content and sending that content down the appropriate avenues. Digital marketer Harry Hawk has provided 5 tips concerning content creation and communication to improve your community.

Are The Best Leaders Purely Defined By Specific Traits?

By Vennli on Aug 8, 2014 1:00:05 PM

According to a recent HBR blog post, the debate between leaders being born and made requires more discussion.

The article suggests that before we can even ask the question, we must first understand it by recognizing two distinct components of leadership: effectiveness and emergence. Effectiveness ties to an individual’s performance in the role of leader. Emergence relates to an individual being recognized as a leader.

10 Lessons Startups Can Learn From Superheroes

By Vennli on Jul 31, 2014 1:00:20 PM
